- Host Hooking Framework (
:appModule - GPL-3.0): The open-source core application and injection framework. It handles process initialization, Xposed hooks, and base features. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3. - Interface Bridge (
:apiModule - Apache-2.0): The open-source contract and DTO layer. Licensed under the permissive Apache License 2.0, it establishes a clean legal and compilation barrier, ensuring no copyleft requirements propagate to external extensions. - WAEX Helper (Proprietary Helper APK - Closed-Source): WAEX Helper is a separate installable plugin APK that provides optional capabilities through the public WAEX API. The GPL host dynamically discovers and loads WAEX Helper at runtime through public interfaces defined in the Apache-2.0 API module. To prevent license contamination, the Helper APK is compiled with zero binary dependencies on the host (
:app) and contains no GPL code. Build-time compliance is enforced via automated Gradle static analysis tasks.
At runtime, WaEnhancerX integrates the companion APK using a decoupled, host-driven execution model:
- Dynamic Discovery: The open-source host detects the presence of the independent companion APK via Android's Package Manager and a secure local
ContentProvider(HookProvider). - Xposed Compatibility Classloading: To satisfy Android's process security model and LSPosed's hook rewriting requirements, the host resolves the companion APK's path and appends it to the ClassLoader. This is an environment-specific compatibility wrapper that allows the companion APK's hooks to run safely in the target process (WhatsApp) without static linking or architectural coupling.
- Interface-Driven Execution: Communication between the host and the companion APK is governed strictly by the
:apiinterface boundaries. The host reflectively instantiates the companion entry point (PluginEntryimplementingIPluginfrom the:apimodule) and executes its capabilities within isolated error boundaries.
WaEnhancerX originally started as a direct fork of WaEnhancer by Dev4Mod. We deeply respect the foundational work, architecture, and Xposed hooking concepts created by the original author.
Why the Repository Was Detached (Architectural Independence): The repository was officially detached from the upstream network to pursue an independent architectural roadmap. At the time, the upstream project initiated a rapid migration to Kotlin. While Kotlin is an excellent modern standard, staying attached would have caused massive merge conflicts with our ongoing, deep-level Java optimizations.
Detaching allowed us to stabilize, refactor, and achieve a zero-lag UI entirely on our own terms, without upstream changes breaking our core architecture. This gives WaEnhancerX the freedom to evolve at its own pace, maintaining a highly optimized, tracker-free, and stable ecosystem.
All legacy logic and core methods adapted from Dev4Mod are explicitly attributed here in full compliance with open-source ethics.
